Though Studebaker was building a reputation for its advanced, well engineered, and powerful motors, the first Erskines instead were assembled models utilizing a lower cost Continental engine. Erskine sales were also disadvantaged because Erskines fell in Studebaker's lower priced market, meaning dealers made less profit on their sales. Therefore, dealers preferred to focus their attentions on more expensive models. The man who envisioned the car was Albert Russel Erskine, Studebaker's president from 1915 to 1933. Born January 24, 1871, in Huntsville, Alabama, his great grandfather had fought with the patriots during the American Revolution. The family went on to build a fortune but Erskine's father, who joined the Confederate army at age sixteen, lost nearly everything during the Civil War. After the war he lived in a number of places, eventually settling in Alabama where Albert was born. From there the family moved to St. Louis where Albert went to public school. When Albert reached the age of fifteen, he began his working career, starting out as an office boy for the Huntsville station of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. By then he was also an avid reader, digging into technical journals and periodicals in the evenings and developing a lifelong habitthat of reading the dictionary daily.

With only 150 miles of paved road coast to coastall within city limitsand no gas stations or road maps, the journey through muck and mire required considerable pluck. Soon after starting out, Jackson acquired the bull terrier Bud as trip mascot, fitted him with goggles and let him ride alongside the co drivers. Climbing mountains, fording streams, and answering questions from curious crowds along the way, Jackson and his cross country quest became headline news. "Vermont" overcame the roughest road conditions and on July 20 reached Cleveland where Shanks had arranged for Winton's top managers and a huge crowd to greet it. At Cleveland's Hotel Hollenden, Winton threw a banquet in Jackson's honor and offered to have plant mechanics check the car, an offer which Jackson refused, fearing it would jeopardize his amateur standing. Shanks found other ways to capitalize on Jackson's trip, though, taking out ads noting that the Winton was unparalleled in American automobile history and calling it King of the Road.

During filming, Henry Clive suddenly decided that he did not want to jump into the tank of cold water in the scene, causing Chaplin to storm off the set and fire Clive. He was quickly replaced by Harry Myers, who Chaplin had known while under contract at Keystone Studios. Chaplin finished shooting the sequence on July 29, 1929 with exteriors at Pasadena Bridge. Chaplin then shot a sequence that was eventually cut from the film involving the Little Tramp attempting to retrieve a stick that was stuck in a grate. The scene included a young Charles Lederer; Chaplin later praised the scene, but insisted that it needed to be cut. He then continued filming the scenes with the millionaire until September 29, 1929.
